When administered promptly after a bite or exposure to the saliva of a rabid animal, the rabies vaccine prevents the disease. Remember, however, that rabies is invariably fatal once symptoms have appeared.
IN THE CASE OF A BITE, WASH THE WOUND WITH SOAP AND WATER FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES AND CALL INFO-SANTÉ 8-1-1 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Treatment is administered for prevention when a person has been exposed to the rabies virus. The patient receives a dose of antibodies and four doses of rabies vaccine over 14 days.
The rabies vaccine is safe. Most reactions to the vaccine are benign and of short duration and may include pain or swelling at the injection site, nausea, and muscle aches. Allergic reactions are also a possibility. Symptoms occurring after vaccination are often not caused by the vaccine.
